The RCMP Security Service is the former division of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police which had obligations of security and national intelligence .
In 1950, the Special Branch of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police was officially created to run its counterintelligence operations.
The division was a part of the Criminal Investigation Branch of the RCMP, where criminal investigations and political security operations are not distinct before 1936. The Mounties carried out wide-ranging security service work since the force was reconstituted in 1920, when it became the federal authorities bureau specifically in charge of national security and united with the Dominion Police. Between the wars, this work was directed at the Communist Party and the left and labour generally.
In 1984, intelligence work was transferred to a fresh agency, CSIS, as an effect of illegal tactics used by the Security Service and consequent scandals besieging the RCMP. The RCMP has become involved in intelligence work, nonetheless, especially associated with terrorism following the bombing of the 9/11 strikes. and Air India Flight 182 in 1985
